Police Warn Monterey Park Residents of “Psychic Healer” Crime Ring
Monterey Park, CA. – Residents of Monterey Park were warned on Thursday by police to be on the lookout for a group of women who are claiming to be “Psychic Healers” and robbing people of their money and jewelry.
According to the Monterey Park Police Department, these fraudulent women mostly target Chinese residents who are female and elderly. They are approaching the victims in various places, such as shopping centers and bus stops.
One of the victims reported to the police on January 15th that three women walked up to her when she was on the corner of Atlantic Blvd. and Garvey Ave. and told her that she was suffering from illness, bad luck, and evil spirits. They informed her that they knew of a psychic healer who would be able to help her.
She was instructed by the suspects to retrieve rice, jewelry, and money from her house and bring it back to them in a plastic bag. They told her that these items would be prayed over and blessed, and that after that it would be returned to them. They told her that when she receives the “blessed” items back, her bad luck would be removed.
The elderly woman did as she was asked and brought her valuables back to the women. The women then put on a ceremonial “show” with the valuables and gave them back to the victim. They instructed her not to look into the bag for several days after the ceremony or the blessing would not work.
The unsuspecting victim followed directions and did not open the bag until several days later. When she finally did look in the bag, she realized that they had replaced her valuables with newspaper and a bottle of water.
A different police department had recently taken these same women into custody for pulling an identical scheme but they were released due to lack of evidence against them.
Authorities are now looking for them again but are unable to locate them. They are believed to be staying in local or residential motels.
They are asking residents to keep an eye out for the suspects and to report any suspicious activity of this nature, or if they or somebody they know is approached by anyone with similar requests to the Monterey Park Police Department at (626) 573-1311.
