Introduction To The 7 Chakras

Chakras are energy centers inside our bodies, and energy is the foundation for all life; it’s the basis of everything that exists and ever has existed. There are seven chakra (energy) points in the human body. They start at the tip of your tailbone and end on the top of your head. When your life-force energy stops flowing freely, your chakras become blocked.

Blocked chakras make it hard to feel centered, energized, or grounded. You’re also more prone to physical and mental illnesses if your chakras are blocked, neglected, or overused. I wrote this article to give you an overview of each of the seven chakras. I want to explain their function, the physical and mental effects if they’re blocked, the benefits of balanced chakras, and how to keep them free-flowing.

The Root Chakra- Being

The root chakra, or “Muladhara Chakra,” is the first one that forms your foundation and is located at the bottom of your spine. It’s responsible for developing feelings of security and survival. It gives you the ability to feel deeply rooted in your life. It’s associated with satisfying your basic needs, like family relationships. It’s also responsible for how at home you feel on the planet and in your body. Like the color associated with life and passion, the root chakra’s color is red. Physical signs of a blocked sacral chakra range from

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Sudden weight gain or loss
  • Incontinence
  • Constipation
  • Pelvic pain

Mental signs of a blocked root chakra can show up as two different things. The first is anxiety and physical exhaustion that results from rushing around from one thing to the next without paying much attention or doing it without intention. The second is the opposite- mental exhaustion from having no firm direction and therefore feeling lethargic, stuck, having no energy to do anything, and not being able to do things with intention.

When your root chakra is aligned, you’ll be able to tap into the stability it provides and have a more tranquil and constant energy source. One way to keep this chakra strong is to do exercises that ground you to the earth. Things like using crystals, dancing, jogging, or running will strengthen the connection between your body and mind and its physical surroundings- like a tree with its roots buried deep in the ground.

The Sacral Chakra- Feeling

The sacral chakra, or “Svadhisthana Chakra,” is located in your lower abdomen and inner pelvis. It’s responsible for cultivating feelings of pleasure, desire, and sensuality. It’s in charge of helping you grow a healthy relationship with pleasure and teaching you your deepest emotions and desires. It also allows you to set healthy boundaries with others. Like the color associated with happiness, the sacral chakra’s color is orange. The physical signs of a blocked sacral chakra are:

  • Constant lower back pain.
  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Ovarian cysts (as well as other reproductive issues).
  • Impotence.
  • Painful intercourse.
  • Other lower pelvic/abdominal problems.

Mental signs of blocked sacral chakra are repressed memories, lack of creativity, low self-esteem, and addictions. When your sacral chakra is aligned, you will have the energy needed for movement, creativity, confidence, zest for life, relationships, desire, pleasure, and reproduction. You can strengthen your sacral chakra by dancing, doing yoga, getting massages, identifying your sexual blockages, and spending time touching all areas of your body while repeating loving affirmations to yourself.

The Solar Plexus Chakra- Doing

The solar plexus chakra, or “Manipura Chakra,” is located in your stomach and upper abdomen. Its job is manifesting your sense of self, willpower, decision-making abilities, confidence, and independence. Like the Sun, the color associated with the solar plexus chakra is yellow. Physical signs that your solar plexus chakra is blocked include digestive issues like

  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Constipation
  • The inability to process nutrients
  • Diabetes
  • Ulcers
  • Eating disorders

Mental signs appear in two different ways. The first one is feeling aggressive, controlling, and overly strict. The second is the opposite- having a victim mentality, being needy, and having no direction or rules. When your solar plexus chakra is aligned, you’ll feel empowered, have a strong sense of self, and be able to accomplish goals and control your destiny.

You’ll be happy within yourself without needing external things to make you happy. Keep your solar plexus chakra healthy by taking risks, learning new things, challenging yourself, setting and accomplishing goals, distancing yourself from negative people, meditating, and practicing yoga.

The Heart Chakra- Loving

The heart chakra, or “Anahata Chakra,” is probably the most widely known. It’s in the center of your chest, just above your heart. The heart chakra determines how you send out love and interprets the love you receive back in relationships and life. It’s associated with unconditional love, joy, and compassion.

The heart chakra is right in the center and is the bridge between the first three and the last three chakras. It is the source of deep and meaningful truths that can only be felt and not conveyed with words. Like the color associated with life and regrowth, the heart chakra’s color is green. Physical signs that your heart chakra is blocked are

  • Heart and lung conditions
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Poor circulation

Mental signs are feeling unworthy, an inability to trust yourself or others, manipulative behaviors, and co-dependence on others. An adequately aligned heart chakra results in feelings of compassion, joy, feeling connected to the world around you and feeling surrounded by love. Keep your heart chakra strong by going forest bathing as often as possible, setting boundaries, hugging more, doing shadow work, doing something kind every day, showing gratitude, and meditating.

The Throat Chakra- Speaking

Your throat chakra, or “Vishuddha Chakra,” is located in your throat, as you may have guessed. It has to do with your voice and is in charge of helping you communicate openly, clearly, honestly, and gracefully. This chakra helps you communicate your thoughts and feelings in order to reach a higher spiritual vibration. Like the color associated with heaven, the throat chakra’s color is blue. Physical signs that your throat chakra is blocked range from

  • Thyroid problems
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Jaw pain (TMJ)
  • Hearing issues
  • Sore throat

Mentally, you’ll feel unable to communicate correctly, ask for what you want, make your voice heard, and create the world you want. The throat chakra is the bridge between your heart and your mind. When aligned, the result is having the wisdom of both heart and mind, spiritual freedom, and the ability to effectively communicate your wants, needs, boundaries, ideas, love, and feelings. For a healthy throat chakra, do breathing exercises, sing, hum, or chant as much as possible, journal, draw, paint, or color, listen intently to others, meditate, and drinks lots and lots of water.

The Third Eye Chakra- Seeing

The third eye chakra, or “Ajna Chakra,” is situated between your eyebrows, just above eye level on your forehead. It is associated with intuition, higher knowledge, perception, reality, and insight. It’s also in charge of your imagination and self-awareness, as well as enhanced awareness of things you can only feel but can’t “see” with your eyes. Like the color associated with intuition, the third eye chakra’s color is indigo. Physical signs of a misaligned third eye chakra include

  • Vision problems
  • Sinus issues
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Migraines

Mental signs include delusions, addictions, arrogance, stubbornness, and mental confusion. When your third eye chakra is aligned, you can see things for what they are without ego getting in the way. When you see things more clearly, you can work towards what you want in life more productively.

Keep your third eye chakra strong by seeing things from others’ perspectives (reading, listening to debates, watching different programs and channels than you usually would), practicing mindfulness, star and moon bathing, candle gazing, and practicing yoga.

The Crown Chakra- Understanding

Lastly, we have the crown chakra, or “Sahasrara Chakra,” which can be the hardest to take care of. The reason could be because it sits in a delicate part of your body- the very top of your head. It’s responsible for your ability to be one and at peace with everything around, which isn’t an easy task! It’s related to your thoughts, wisdom, enlightenment, knowledge of self, connection to spirit, and unity. Like the color associated with royalty and crowns, the crown chakra’s color is purple. Physical signs of a blocked crown chakra include

  • Insomnia
  • Mental fog
  • Confusion
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Headaches
  • Neurological and endocrine disorders

Mental signs include greediness, egotism, narrow-mindedness, existential depression, spiritual disconnection, and mental illness like schizophrenia. You’ll feel connected and compassionate to your Higher Self and others. You’ll be able to see the bigger picture in life, access your inner wisdom, and feel a sense of calm and peace in your life no matter what’s going on when your crown chakra is aligned.

Keep your crown chakra strong by first ensuring that your other six chakras are in good shape. After that, you can meditate regularly, use affirmations, keep your body, mind, and surroundings clean and clutter-free, learn as much as possible, and do energy work.

Like other spiritual and health practices, keeping your chakras aligned and balanced takes consistency and deliberate care. You owe it to yourself to live a life where you’re in touch with your emotional, spiritual, and physical self. Use these tips as a primary starting point and start your journey towards optimal energy flow.
