Denver, CO.- Kathy Adams’ family always thought there was something strange about her husband. They used the words “sadistic” and “extreme” to describe him to a judge when he was being tried for sexual assault and murder in Adams’ case. The judge found him guilty and he was sentenced to 56 years to life in prison.
“We can never recover,” said Danny Adams- Kathy’s brother. “This man cannot be freed again to put anyone through what this family has been through.”
A jury found her husband, 50-year-old John Marks Jr. guilty of her murder last month. After the sentencing, Marks refused to say anything after getting the verdict. He had been arrested in October of 2010 after his wife’s body was found near the Larimer-Boulder County line stripped of her clothes, strangled, and severely beaten at the bottom of a ravine. She was 57 at the time of her death.
Kathy Adams ran a psychic business under the name of Psychic Kay in Fort Collins. Her and John Marks had been married for 20 years. Kathy’s family was present at all of the trials for John and throughout the trial they spoke of his history of abuse.
John had three sons before his marriage to Kathy and they showed their support for their father, asking for a lighter sentence for him. Two of them were there in person and the third sent a letter that was read by Jerry Roselle, John’s attorney.
“[Kathy Adams] never said anything about John being violent toward her,” said Roselle.
According to Kathy’s relatives, she was in the process of leaving John when he murdered her.
For the second-degree murder, District Judge Thomas French sentenced John to forty-eight years in prison- this is also the maximum possible amount of time for this charge. As for the sexual assault charge, he sentenced him to eight years to life in prison. Both of his sentences are to be served consecutively.
It was a pretty easy decision for the jury to convict John because there was a bloody scene as well as DNA at the Marks’ home the day of her murder. These were all presented to the jury in the trial.
As if that wasn’t enough, Larimer County sheriff investigators also tracked John’s cell phone and they discovered that he had been to the location where they found Kathy’s body. Wal-Mart also had video surveillance footage of him at the store buying work gloves and duct tape around the time of her disappearance.
The gloves that he purchased were later found in John’s vehicle. His vehicle was found parked at a hotel in the Longmont area with no license plates on it. Authorities decided to search the car after a cadaver-sniffing dog took interest in the trunk. This is where the investigators found garbage bags, cleaning supplies, and the gloves.
John had been staying in various different hotels under various different names up until his arrest. He was arrested at a restaurant off of Interstate 25 in Perkins
