Fake Psychics Scamming Victims Out Of Thousand In Monterey Park

Monterey Park, CA. – Residents of Monterey Park were warned on Thursday by police to be on the lookout for a group of scammers. They are women claiming to be “Psychic Healers” and robbing people of their money and jewelry.

According to the Monterey Park Police Department, these fraudulent women primarily target Chinese residents who are female and elderly. They approach the victims in various places, such as shopping centers and bus stops. One of the victims reported to the police on January 15th that three women walked up to her at the corner of Atlantic Blvd. and Garvey Ave.

They told her she was suffering from illness, bad luck, and evil spirits and that they knew a psychic healer who would help her. The suspects instructed her to bring rice, jewelry, and money back from her house in a plastic bag. They told her they would pray over and bless these items for her. The cons assured her that the items would be returned to her afterward.

Her bad luck would be gone once she received the now “blessed” items back. The older woman did as asked and returned her valuables to the scammers. The women then put on a ceremonial “show” with the valuables and returned them to the victim. They instructed her not to look into the bag for several days after the ceremony, or the blessing wouldn’t work.

Their Plan Works Best On Desperate Victims

The unsuspecting victim followed directions and did not open the bag for several days. When she finally did look in it, she realized they had replaced her valuables with newspapers and a water bottle. A different police department had recently taken these same women into custody for pulling an identical scheme.

Unfortunately, the police had to release them due to insufficient evidence. Authorities are now looking for them again but are unable to locate them. They believe the fraudulent individuals are staying in local or residential motels.

Monterey Police Department asks residents to watch for the suspects and report any suspicious activity of this nature. They also want to be notified if anyone approaches them or someone they know with similar requests. You can reach the Monterey Park Police Department at (626) 573 1311.
