Lets start with the definition. The word "psychic" means "of the soul" or "mental" and is usually used to describe a persons special ability to see hidden information, outside of the five known senses. Cayce believed that he could make contact with dead spirits, and that was what gave him his predictions.
In 2005 Gallup, one of the leaders in surveys, found that an amazing 41% of Americans polled believe in ESP. The very same study found that 26% believe in clairvoyance and 31% believe in psychic or telepathic communication. According to a 2006 survey conducted by Oklahoma City University, the belief in psychic phenomena is more common among college seniors (31%) and graduate students (34%) than among freshman students (23%) which suggests that people with higher education level may be more likely to trust in psychic advisors. Some people also believe that psychic ability can be passed down across many generations. Others believe that psychic powers can be enhanced or "turned on" by honing mental disciplines such as meditation, however most real Psychics believe you can only be born with the gift.
People that claim to have psychic abilities often seek to make a living from their talents. They host psychic hotlines, and websites touting their psychic abilities. Because of the size of this business it has become much harder to be sure if the person you consult with is a genuine psychic advisor or just a fake psychic looking to lighten your wallet.
