Norton, OH- Once again, Halloween is upon us, and with this comes the images of ghosts, ghouls, witches, spirits, and everything else that gives us goosebumps! However, rest assured- not everyone is out to scare us. Take Psychic Medium Helen Mayor, for example.
Mayor states that her goal is to help us, not bring fear into our lives. She feels that her gift comes from God. “This is the time of year when I get people telling me I’m going to burn in hell,” she says, referring to Halloween time. Mayor was never allowed to pursue or even talk about her extraordinary abilities as a child. Her family raised her as a Methodist on a farm in Washington, Pa., and prohibited this kind of talk.
“I was three years old when I realized I saw people and would talk to them. When I was five years old, I realized I was different. That was the 50’s and 60’s. My family didn’t believe in ghosts and didn’t want to hear about them. For years I wondered why I couldn’t say anything since they always told me to tell the truth,” said Mayor. She also states that other psychics and mediums give her a hard time because she helps people of her own free will and doesn’t ask for any payment.
“God gave me this gift, and I don’t know why. The first thing I do is pray, ‘Lord, it’s your will.’ So many people think mediums are out to scam others to get money. For me, it’s truly about helping people,” she says. Even though the idea of ghosts creeps most of us out, Mayor believes that ghosts are made up of energy and stay in our world for various reasons.
Mayor Doesn’t Think Spirits Are Very Different Than The Living
“They have free will just as we do,” she says. “Some of them want to tell you something to help you. It may be a murder victim looking for justice. Some have a message to impart but die before they can tell you. Some come back because they want to.” She continues, “People don’t understand that life is like a river. Time is not what you think.” However, Mayor acknowledges that evil exists in our world and has personally encountered it in her years of working in this field.
“If you believe in heaven, you must believe in evil and hell. I have seen it. I have battled it. People are not aware how much evil exists,” she says. She admits that she has never had an official epiphany but says that her relationship with Jesus is very close. “I’m trying to do what he tells me,” she shares. Since Mayor doesn’t make a living using her psychic abilities, she works at the Canal Warehouse in Norton, leading ghost tours. The building used to have a mortuary, and Ken and Margarita Roberts own it.
Both Ken Roberts and Mayor agree that several ghosts haunt the mortuary section of the house, and Lester Finefrock, who initially owned the building, is the most well-known. Ken Roberts states that, like Mayor, he and his wife are devout Christians. “If you don’t have Jesus and God in your life, you have nothing,” he says. “We always say God uses people like Helen. You don’t have to be a Billy Graham. There are a lot of ways to deliver the message.”
The Psychic Isn’t Out To Scare People
Even though Roberts believes there are spirits in his building, he refuses to let anyone bring a Ouija board or hold a seance in it because he is a practicing Catholic. Mayor says, “If people are looking for a fright, they must go elsewhere. This journey is a spiritual journey. Ghosts represent the ultimate question: What happens when we die? Six feet of ground is not the end; there is more.”
Unfortunately, many Christians dismiss Mayor and do not believe she helps people by serving God first. Many Christians believe that the Bible specifically reprimands the use of psychics and psychic activity. However, it is Ken Robert’s opinion that this is all changing. He referenced a study to back this up. It showed that out of every seven Americans, at least one has used a psychic service before.
In his opinion, this indicates that he may be right about negative views towards psychics may be changing. According to a poll conducted by CBS, 48 percent of Americans believe ghosts exist, and 78 percent stated that they believe in an afterlife. A majority of the same people asked also indicated that they were Christians. “What that tells us is that people have a hunger for a spiritual journey,” says Roberts.
Mayor’s husband, William, a theologian and son of two scientists, admits that he didn’t believe in psychics when he first met Mayor. “But I’ve had so many experiences with her that either [her ability] makes sense, or I have to accept the fact that I’m going crazy,” he says. Like the Old Testament prophets, he believes God is the sole source behind his wife’s special ability.
Mayor Has A Heart Of Gold
Roberts admires that, unlike many mediums and psychics, Mayor does not exploit vulnerable people and doesn’t try to convince people they need her services to make money off them. This quality is very important to him. “I get really upset about that; it isn’t right,” says Mayor. “I don’t know how they sleep at night, and I tell people what I see or hear. There have been times when I was wrong; I have an off day like everybody else. But I truly feel what I have is a gift.
I try to help people the way the Lord wants me to, to help people understand and grow closer to the Lord.” Roberts says, “If a medium is a self-professed Christian who conducts their actions with Christian values and firmly believes that their gift came from God to help others in that capacity, then they pass the test in 1 John 4:1. People with a true gift put God first.”
