A fake psychic company must now refund $7,000 to hundreds of Iowans for their false promises. The company lied to the victims, telling them they would receive money and miracles if they paid a fee. The company, Nature Plus Limited, mailed letters from a supposed “clairvoyant.” This fake clairvoyant promised its recipients they had “ties to spiritual leaders of many world religions.”
According to Iowa Attorney General Thomas Miller, Nature Plus promised the victims riches and life-changing miracles.” The recipients were primarily older adults and women. Nature Plus Limited personalized the letters they sent from fake “psychics” named Mary Theresa or Lady of Hearts. They charged people between $20 to $54, and the more naive and elderly victims paid hundreds throughout the scam.
Thankfully, a concerned Iowa woman made Miller aware of these fraudulent letters. Fortunately, the woman realized her 91-year-old mother was almost broke because she had been mailing checks to the company. Unsurprisingly, Nature Plus tricked her with their promises of “extraordinary powers, riches, and good health,” among other things.
Luckily, the victim’s daughter noticed these checks and intercepted them. It’s unknown how much the woman had already paid the company. Unfortunately, because so many of these mail scams are coming from Europe, it’s difficult for U.S. law enforcement to take action. “This elderly victim’s experience has exposed a very ugly set of practices,” says Miller.
“Fake clairvoyants, manipulative mailings, sophisticated networks targeting vulnerable people- these elements have conspired to cheat thousands of elderly Iowans. We’re doing what we can to regain their money and keep it from happening again.” The court came to a settlement with Nature Plus. As a result, nearly 325 Iowans will receive refunds. In addition, it also prohibited the company from soliciting directly or indirectly from people with an Iowa address.
