It’s unsurprising to want to keep a haunted house a secret because hauntings drastically affect a property’s value. The homeowners don’t want word of that getting out, so they refrain from mentioning it when possible. However, just because you don’t know about it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. According to paranormal activity experts, most hauntings occur in private residential suburban houses.
Because of this, more and more homeowners and buyers are turning to psychics. They seek help removing these spirits and lifting a house’s energy. Psychics everywhere report that more than ever, homeowners seek their services before putting their homes up for sale, and they’ve been performing more “cleansings” on homes than ever before.
2013 Psychic of the Year, Barry Gray, says homebuyers also seek psychic assistance once they move in and discover ‘something just doesn’t feel right.’ “Other times, people say they feel like someone or something is watching them. They may also complain of a room feeling cold or just not right,” he adds. Jim Warwood is a medium who runs Adelaide’s New Age Spiritualist Mission.
He believes that spirits and residual negative energy can affect a person’s happiness and comfort in their house. “It’s become a lot more common for people after a house purchase to seek help when they move in, and something feels not quite right,” he said. Aside from being a medium, Warwood is also a dowser, so he is familiar with other energies besides spirits.
The Difference Is Instant
One of his Warwood clients, Heidi Janosi, struggled to sell her house in one of Adelaide’s premier neighborhoods last year, and it only sold once she found him and had him cleanse the home. “It’s a beautiful 1880s bluestone two-story villa, but I took it off the market after six months because it just wasn’t selling,” said Janosi.
“Jim came- he was so prepared, had researched the home, and had plans for the house’s layout. He used a dowser and walked from room to room. He told us what areas to avoid and placed gemstones in areas of each room. Jim found the spirit of an old lady who had passed away and removed areas of bad energy. Before even being put back on the market, I got a call from the agent with a couple interested. They fell in love with the place and bought it.”
Elisabeth Jensen is vice president of the Australian Psychic Association. She says the demand to “move on spirits or a lost soul in homes” has significantly increased. “With shows like Ghost Whisperer and Medium, people are more aware of how spirits can affect us,” she says. Aside from being the association’s vice president, Jensen is also a psychic medium, healer, and medical intuitive.
She says potential homebuyers also ask her for the best locations and house numbers. “They’ll ask where would be the best place for them to buy a house, the location and number. People want to know about numerology.” Justin Peters is a realtor with LJ Hooker Mile End. He was the agent for a house with three sale contracts falling through, all during the “cooling-off period.”
That all changed, though, once the sellers hired a spiritual cleanser to come and cleanse the house. “Long story short, the spiritual cleanser explained that the owner’s four-year-old child’s energy was very attached to the home. As crazy as it sounds, the house sold at the second inspection after this,” he said.
